1. Who runs Nerdicate?
Nerdicate (nerdicate.com and blog.nerdicate.com) is an independent website about science, technology and related topics, run by Danny. For the purposes of data protection law (GDPR), Danny is the controller of the personal data described below.
Contact: Danny, danny@nerdicate.com
2. What data do we process?
Analytics (only with your consent). We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the website, measure traffic and improve our content. This involves information such as pages visited, interactions with the website, browser and device information, approximate location and online identifiers (a cookie ID). Google states that GA4 does not log or store individual IP addresses. The legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR).
Server logs. The website is hosted by OVH. The web server records technical data such as your IP address, the date and time of the request, the page requested and your browser type. This is necessary to deliver the website and keep it secure (legitimate interest, Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) and is kept according to the hosting provider’s log settings.
Email. If you write to us, we use your email address and message to reply to you (legitimate interest, Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) and keep the conversation for as long as it is needed.
What we do not collect. Nerdicate has no visitor accounts, contact forms, newsletter, comments or checkout. We do not directly collect payment or delivery information. The birthday calculator on the home page runs entirely in your browser: the date you enter is not sent to us or stored.
3. Cookies
Cookies are small files stored in your browser. We use the following:
| Cookie | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary (always on) | ||
laravel_session | Technical session cookie that keeps the website working and secures the site owner’s login. | Up to 2 hours |
XSRF-TOKEN | Security token that protects forms against forged requests. | Up to 2 hours |
nrd_consent | Remembers your cookie choice. Shared between nerdicate.com and blog.nerdicate.com. | 180 days |
| Analytics (only if you accept) | ||
_ga | Google Analytics: distinguishes visitors to measure traffic. | Up to 2 years |
_ga_<ID> | Google Analytics: keeps session state. | Up to 2 years |
4. Google Analytics and your consent
Google Analytics is switched off by default. Its code is not even requested from Google until you click Accept in the cookie banner. If you click Reject or ignore the banner, Google Analytics is not activated and no analytics cookies are set.
We do not use Google Analytics for advertising or personalised advertising. Google signals and ad personalisation are disabled, and advertising storage is denied. Google processes analytics data on our behalf under its applicable terms.
5. Changing your choice
You can change or withdraw your consent at any time with Cookie settings (also available in the footer of every page). Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing before the withdrawal. Choosing Reject deletes the Google Analytics cookies from your browser.
You can also manage or block cookies in your browser settings:
- Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies.
- Mozilla Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Enhanced Tracking Protection.
- Apple Safari: Settings → Privacy.
Blocking cookies in your browser may affect how some websites function.
6. Data retention and international transfers
Google Analytics data is kept for the retention period configured in our Google Analytics property (at most 14 months). Google may process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Google LLC participates in the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and other safeguards required by data protection law apply where relevant.
7. Your privacy rights
Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, you have the right to request access to your personal data, request its correction or deletion, restrict or object to processing, withdraw consent, request data portability, and lodge a complaint with a data protection authority (in Poland: the President of the Personal Data Protection Office, UODO, uodo.gov.pl).
For privacy-related enquiries, contact Danny at danny@nerdicate.com.
8. External websites
Nerdicate links to external websites, including Amazon, TeePublic and TikTok (our short STEM videos). Purchases and other transactions take place on those platforms and are governed by their own privacy policies and terms. Nerdicate does not control their cookies or data-processing practices.
9. Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when the website or its data-processing practices change. The latest version is always published on this page.
